Reputedly the oldest chronological record in history, the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back beyond 2,600 BC. Based on the appearance of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in the 12-year lunar cycle. According to legend, the order of the animals in Chinese astrology was determined by their race across a river. Unknown to the ox, the mouse hitched a ride on its back, leaping to victory at the very last second. The tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig followed the quick-thinking mouse and the flabbergasted ox to dry land.

In Chinese culture, each animal is believed to influence the personality of the people born under its ‘rule’. The pig is the last sign of the Chinese zodiac. The pig is a symbol of independence and curiosity and those born under the influence of the sign are said to be elegant, charming, artistic, gifted and calm. People born in the Year of the pig enjoy life. They love entertainment and will occasionally treat themselves. They are a bit materialistic, but this is motivation for them to work hard. Being able to hold solid objects in their hands gives them security. They are energetic and are always enthusiastic, even for boring jobs. Reverse: features a representation of a domesticated or pet pig, which are typically pink with black markings, amid stylised rocks and foliage including a peony flower. The Chinese character for ‘pig’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Pig’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

Obverse: Depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2019 year-date, as well as the weight, purity, metal, and monetary denomination of twenty-five dollars.
