Because the image of the gold nugget was not widely recognizable, the coin was changed in 1989 to feature an image of the kangaroo. The coin is now commonly referred to as the Kangaroo Nugget.  The obverse of the coin features the iconic Australian kangaroo. The reverse side features Queen Elizabeth II, a tradition of Australian gold bullion coins.
