Brisbane Bullion presents the 1oz Lunar Ox Silver Coin (2021) from the Australian Lunar Series III by the Perth Mint.
This is the 2nd coin in a set of 12 and depicts the Year of the Ox, the second of twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese lunar calendar. Each coin’s reverse portrays a stylised representation of an Ox among bamboo stalks. The striking design also includes the Chinese character for ‘ox’, the inscription ‘OX 2021’ and The Perth Mint ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin’s obverse depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the monetary denomination, the weight and fineness.
Reputedly the oldest chronological record in history, the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back beyond 2,600 BC. Based on the appearance of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in the 12-year lunar cycle.
According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Ox was about to be the first to arrive, but Rat tricked Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox. Thus, Ox became the second animal.
In Chinese culture, each animal is believed to influence the personality of the people born under its ‘rule’. Calm, confident and determined, people born in the Year of the Ox reject get-rich-quick schemes and are prepared to work hard to make their fortune. They are said to make good leaders, can be inspirational to others, usually make good parents, and possess an innate ability to achieve great things. Intelligent, tolerant, easy going and self-assured, they are often regarded as dependable, patient and modest.
Struck from 99.99% pure silver, these sovereign-backed coins would make an ideal gift for anyone born during the year of the Ox.
