2021 1oz Lunar Ox Gold Coin

Brisbane Bullion presents the 1 oz Lunar Ox Gold Coin (2021) from the Australian Lunar Series III by the Perth Mint. 

This is the 2^nd coin in a set of 12 and depicts the Year of the Ox, the second of twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese lunar calendar. Each coin’s reverse portrays a stylised representation of an Ox among bamboo stalks. The striking design also includes the Chinese character for ‘ox’, the inscription ‘OX 2021’ and The Perth Mint ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the monetary denomination, the weight and fineness.

Reputedly the oldest chronological record in history, the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back beyond 2,600 BC. Based on the appearance of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in the 12-year lunar cycle.

According to legend, the order of the animals in Chinese astrology was determined by their race across a river. Unknown to the ox, the mouse hitched a ride on its back, leaping to victory at the very last second. The tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig followed the quick-thinking mouse and the flabbergasted ox to dry land.
